Fuel allowance: Bercy promises stricter controls against fraud

The French Public Finances Directorate (DGFiP) has assured that the future fuel allowance scheme for low-income workers who drive long distances will be accompanied by stricter controls to limit fraud. This exceptional €50 allowance is intended to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices linked to international tensions and soaring oil prices.

The online application platform will open on May 27th via the impots.gouv.fr website. Applicants will need to complete a secure form and provide various personal and administrative details related to their vehicle and tax situation.

Cross-checks with insurers

To prevent abuse, the tax authorities plan to cross-reference certain data with that of insurance companies. The aim is, in particular, to verify that the declared vehicle is indeed insured in the applicant's name and that only one subsidy is granted per vehicle.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (Bercy) also asserts its intention to strengthen the system's IT security against the risks of cyber fraud. Authorities acknowledge that every new public assistance program attracts attempts at misappropriation, hence the implementation of specific controls from the platform's launch.

The aid will be reserved for low-income workers whose taxable income per share does not exceed a certain threshold and who use their vehicle extensively for work-related travel or commuting. The application form will remain accessible for two months.
