Sexual violence against minors: police commissioners denounce a "betrayal" by Gérald Darmanin

The National Police Commissioners' Union reacted strongly to the letter sent on July 29th by Gérald Darmanin to the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez. The document lists several shortcomings in the handling of investigations into sexual violence against children.

The Minister of Justice specifically mentions the existence of a significant "phantom backlog" of cases not forwarded to prosecutors by the police and gendarmerie. The letter cites 1,275 cases unknown to the justice system in Nîmes, 905 in Caen, and approximately fifteen cases that appear to have been lost in Bourges.

"An insult" to investigators

Frédéric Lauze, the union's general secretary, denounced the document as "an insult" and "a blow" to the police. He accused Gérald Darmanin, the former Minister of the Interior, of trying to evade all responsibility despite having led the police force for several years.

The union representative attributes these difficulties to a lack of resources, the complexity of criminal procedures, and the backlog of nearly three million cases. According to him, an independent report would also have examined the responsibilities of the judiciary and political leaders in the observed delays.
