Upon returning from a weekend away, an Ajaccio resident discovered his home had been broken into and his safe emptied. In addition to €4,000 in cash, the thieves made off with fifteen unregistered firearms, including an AK-47 assault rifle. The robbery, which took place between Friday, May 15th and Sunday, May 17th, has led the public prosecutor's office to open an investigation for aggravated robbery.
The case has been handed over to the Organized and Specialized Crime Division of the National Police. The burglarized home had no video surveillance system, which immediately complicates the investigation to identify the perpetrators.
A tense island context
The island has a firearms density twice the national average, a fact that gives this theft particular significance. Last February, a veritable arsenal was discovered in Propriano, including some twenty firearms, grenades, and more than eighteen kilograms of civilian and military explosives.
The public prosecutor of Ajaccio, Nicolas Septe, stated that the legal status of these weapons was being verified. The question of how a private individual could possess such an arsenal without declaring it now constitutes a separate aspect of the investigation.
