The Strasbourg criminal court sentenced a 30-year-old man to 18 months' imprisonment, suspended, on Friday for exchanging intimate content on Snapchat with a 12-year-old girl at the time of the offenses. The suspect was located after several months of searching led by the girl's father.
The court also ordered his registration in the FIJAIS, the automated judicial file of perpetrators of sexual or violent offenses. The convicted man will have to undergo treatment, compensate the victim, and abide by a ban on working in any profession involving contact with minors.
The teenager's father considers the sentence insufficient.
Georges Bilello discovered on April 16, 2025, that his daughter was exchanging messages with several men on Snapchat. He immediately filed a complaint. Already traumatized by the recent death of her mother, the teenager attempted suicide the following day before being resuscitated. A 36-year-old man, also identified by the father, was sentenced in March 2026 to a one-year suspended prison sentence.
In the second case, the father claims to have personally tracked down the man in his thirties before passing his findings on to the authorities. He believes, however, that the 18-month suspended sentence is not severe enough and regrets that his personal efforts were not given more consideration.
