"Without him, Samuel Paty would still be alive": Imam Hassen Chalghoumi condemns Abdelhakim Sefrioui during the appeal trial for the teacher's murder

During the appeal trial of the accomplices of Samuel Paty's murder, Tuesday's hearings opened with palpable tension, marked by a direct confrontation between the key witness for the civil party and one of the defendants. Imam Hassen Chalghoumi took the stand to forcefully denounce Abdelhakim Sefrioui's role in the series of events leading to the history and geography teacher's assassination.

Unfortunately, Imam Chalghoumi was unable to finish his testimony: following an intense intervention, he was hospitalized after falling ill during the hearing. He is expected to be heard again on Friday, according to the presiding judge.

As a reminder, this appeal trial focuses on examining the responsibilities of the four defendants who appealed the heavy sentences handed down in the first instance: two associates of the assailant, Naïm Boudaoud and Azim Epsirkhanov, were convicted of complicity in terrorist murder, as well as Brahim Chnina and Abdelhakim Sefrioui, convicted of criminal association in connection with the hate campaign that preceded the attack perpetrated by Abdoullakh Anzorov in October 2020.

"Without this individual, Samuel Paty would still be in his classroom."

From the very first moments of his testimony, Imam Chalghoumi, visibly moved, set the tone: "Without this individual, Samuel Paty would still be in his classroom."he declared to the court, pointing at Sefrioui. The imam argued that Sefrioui, through his public statements and social media presence, had contributed to "prepare the ground" to the fatal attack. He mentioned demonstrations organized in 2010 by the group linked to the accused in front of his mosque in Drancy, threats that targeted him personally, and a video published in 2020 in which Sefrioui referred to Samuel Paty as "thug".

Hassen Chalghoumi described Sefrioui as a "Fanatical Islamist" and "guru" which, according to him, disseminated "victimhood" narratives likely to motivate violent acts: "It was Sefrioui's propaganda that caused all this."he stated.

Professor Samuel Paty was brutally beheaded

The case dates back to October 16, 2020: Professor Samuel Paty was brutally beheaded near the Bois d'Aulne middle school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine by a radicalized young man of Chechen origin, who was apprehended shortly afterward by police. The controversy was sparked by a social media campaign after a 13-year-old student falsely claimed that Paty had discriminated against Muslim students during a lesson on freedom of expression in which caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad were shown.

At the first trial, seven men and one woman were found guilty for their role in the climate of hatred and intimidation that preceded the attack, receiving sentences ranging from one to 16 years in prison. The four people appealing contest their responsibility, some arguing the lack of a direct link between their actions and the murder, or pleading innocence.

During this appeal hearing, Abdelhakim Sefrioui's defense also distinguished itself with a controversial line of argument, with some lawyers going so far as to question elements relating to the context of Samuel Paty's lesson, arousing indignation among the civil parties.

The court must continue its examination of the case file until the close of the session, scheduled for February 27, at which time the pleadings and requests will be delivered.

Until then, the writing ofInterviews wishes a speedy recovery to Imam Hassen Chalghoumi, whose strength and courage have never wavered despite the numerous acts of intimidation and threats he has received…
