A 22-year-old man riding a scooter was seriously injured on Friday, August 7, after colliding with a police van in Rennes. His condition remained critical on Sunday, according to the Rennes prosecutor's office. An investigation has been launched to determine the precise circumstances of the accident.
According to initial information released by Deputy Prosecutor Jean-Marie Blin, the young man allegedly followed the riot police vehicle, insulting its occupants. The van then stopped, and a police officer got out, while the driver drove off to make a U-turn a short distance away.
The CCTV footage will be analyzed.
The young man reportedly evaded the police officer before continuing on his way. After overtaking a car at high speed, he apparently turned around to check if he was being followed but failed to see the van, which was returning in the opposite direction at reduced speed. Despite the driver's attempt to avoid the collision, the scooter violently struck the front right fender of the vehicle.
The police officers present will be interviewed as part of the investigation. Authorities are also seeking to identify the driver of the car that was overtaken just before the collision, as she may have witnessed the scene. Finally, investigators will review CCTV footage to reconstruct the exact sequence of events.
