Four people have been arrested and taken into custody as part of the investigation into the arson attack that occurred on May 11 in a building in Décines-Charpieu, near Lyon. According to the prosecutor's office, they are two adults and two minors aged 16 to 18, arrested in the Lyon metropolitan area.
The fire ravaged a seven-story building on Rue Sully in the Prainet district. The tragedy claimed three lives: a 28-year-old man and his 61-year-old aunt, who were found in a top-floor apartment, and another 28-year-old man who had jumped from a window to escape the flames. Fourteen people were also injured.
The drug trafficking angle remains the preferred theory.
Investigators are still considering the possibility of a drug-related settling of scores as a serious possibility. The investigation is focusing in particular on charges of "damage caused by dangerous means resulting in death," "premeditated murder by an organized group," and "criminal conspiracy."
Shortly after the fire started, CCTV footage showed two individuals dressed in dark clothing leaving the scene on a scooter. The three victims were not known to the police, according to the Lyon prosecutor's office.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez praised the work of investigators following the arrests, describing the events as "unacceptable and tragic." This case comes amid heightened security pressures in the Lyon metropolitan area, where authorities have been stepping up operations against drug trafficking for several weeks.
