The Mulhouse criminal court sentenced a 28-year-old inmate to three years in prison for violence committed against five guards at the Mulhouse-Lutterbach penitentiary. The incident occurred on May 30, when an intervention in the disciplinary unit escalated, resulting in two serious injuries among the prison officers.
According to the investigation, the inmate, placed in solitary confinement for disciplinary reasons, refused to stand during mealtime distribution. In accordance with procedures, four guards then entered his cell. The man violently lunged at them, requiring the intervention of the local security team. A total of seven officers were mobilized to subdue him.
Two guards seriously injured
Five prison staff members were injured during the operation, two of them seriously. One of the guards, who is still on sick leave, had to undergo surgery after suffering severe injuries to his genitals.
During the hearing, the prosecutor justified his request for a three-year prison sentence by citing the severity of the violence, the number of victims, and the defendant's attitude, noting his reticence and lack of remorse. The lawyer for the victims denounced a "gratuitous attack" of "rare violence," particularly traumatic for the officers.
Already convicted twelve times, notably for making death threats against public officials, the prisoner was returned to the Nancy-Maxéville detention center, where he had been transferred. Prior to this latest conviction, his release was scheduled for July 2027.
