Mayotte: A large-scale security operation launched against crime

Authorities in Mayotte have launched a new large-scale operation called "Kingia," aimed at combating insecurity in the territory. Scheduled to last two months, it mobilizes around one hundred law enforcement officers with the objective of tackling crime, the informal economy, and substandard housing.

The prefect of Mayotte presented this plan to local elected officials, expressing his desire to create a "security shock." Among the objectives set is the arrest of several dozen gang leaders, in a context marked by persistent crime.

A comprehensive strategy combining security and control

The operation also includes targeted actions against fraud, with several dozen planned interventions, as well as the dismantling of shantytowns. It follows on from previous operations carried out in the area in recent years.

While some elected officials welcome this initiative, they also emphasize the need to accompany these security measures with social policies, particularly those aimed at young people. The region continues to face higher than average levels of violence, which fuels expectations for lasting solutions.
