A two-year-old boy was found dead on Sunday in an apartment in the Cité des Marronniers housing project in Marseille's 14th arrondissement. Called at midday, firefighters were unable to revive him, and a doctor pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to initial reports from police sources, the child was discovered after a nap, hanging from the cord of a shutter. His body showed signs of strangulation and was found on a bed placed near a window. The alarm was reportedly raised by a 13-year-old girl from the family.
Inconsistencies noted in the initial statements
The child's mother, her partner, and the teenage girl were taken into custody for questioning. Investigators reportedly noted that the adults' explanations did not align with the child's body temperature and the presumed time of death.
The investigation will determine whether it was a domestic accident or if another cause should be considered. The precise circumstances of the death, the position of the bed, and the chronology of events are now central to the investigation. At this stage, the detention of the three individuals questioned does not imply any responsibility on their part.
