Lille: A vast counterfeit cigarette trafficking ring dismantled; the losses amount to 12 million euros

Three people have been charged following the dismantling of a network specializing in the import and resale of counterfeit cigarettes in the Lille metropolitan area. The total losses are estimated at 12 million euros.

Since December 2025, approximately 120 convoys have transported cigarettes from Belgium, averaging 7,500 packs per trip. The products, which notably mimicked the appearance of Marlboro packs, were then offered to consumers on social media, primarily Snapchat.

More than 220,000 euros in cash seized

Investigators arrested the suspected ringleader and two dealers. Searches resulted in the seizure of 600 cartons of counterfeit cigarettes, €223,500 in cash, one kilogram of cannabis, and approximately 400 grams of cocaine.

The investigation, opened in April following a tip-off to the police, is continuing for aggravated money laundering and undeclared work. Belgium is considered a major production site for counterfeit cigarettes: eleven clandestine factories have reportedly been dismantled there since the beginning of the year.
