The alleged head of the DZ mafia, Mehdi Laribi, arrested in Algeria

One of the leading figures of the DZ Mafia is now in the hands of Algerian justice. Mehdi Laribi, nicknamed "Tik" and described by investigators as one of the founders and alleged leaders of the powerful Marseille-based criminal organization, was arrested in Algeria at the end of July on a warrant issued by French authorities. The information, confirmed on Wednesday, August 5, marks a new stage in the fight against organized drug trafficking.

French-Algerian Mehdi Laribi, originally from Marseille, had been wanted for several years. French authorities considered him a priority target due to his alleged role in structuring and developing the DZ Mafia, an organization accused of being at the heart of much of the drug-related violence in Marseille. According to investigators, he notably participated in the creation of the network and is believed to be behind the bloody war against the rival Yoda clan.

His arrest took place on July 31 as part of Operation Octopus, a large-scale judicial offensive launched by French authorities against the DZ Mafia. Following his detention, he was placed under judicial supervision by the Algerian authorities. The subsequent course of the proceedings will now depend on judicial cooperation between Algiers and Paris.

Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin welcomed this development, thanking the Algerian authorities for their cooperation with the National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office (PNACO) and the Marseille prosecutor's office. This arrest is seen as a significant success in France's strategy to disrupt the criminal networks that control drug trafficking from abroad.

While this arrest represents a significant blow to the DZ Mafia, investigators emphasize that the organization is not centered around a single individual. The network operates through several leaders and intermediaries, some of whom are already incarcerated while others remain at large. Nevertheless, the arrest of Mehdi Laribi represents one of the most important victories against this criminal organization since the launch of major judicial operations targeting drug trafficking in Marseille.
