A 56-year-old man was sentenced to eight months in prison, four of which were suspended, for threatening the prefect of the Loire department, François-Xavier Bieuville, at his home. Tried under the immediate appearance procedure before the Saint-Étienne criminal court, he was also ordered to pay €1,500 in damages for threatening and insulting a public official.
The events took place in front of the prefect's residence.
According to the prefect's statements at the hearing, the man in his fifties appeared on Wednesday at the perimeter wall of his official residence, wearing a yellow vest. He allegedly hurled several threats and insults at him before fleeing. The prefect, however, managed to photograph the license plate of the vehicle used by the suspect.
The defendant mentions a message about climate change
Originally from the Haute-Loire region, the defendant denied making any threats. He explained to the court that he only wanted to convey a message related to the climate emergency and denied the charges against him.
Investigators determined that this nurse, currently on sick leave, was known to police and the courts for several prior offenses. Described as having ties to the "Yellow Vest" movement, he was ultimately found guilty by the court.
