A year after the murder that shocked the education community and sparked outrage across the country, the teenager accused of killing a supervisor at the Françoise-Dolto middle school in Nogent, Haute-Marne, will appear before the juvenile court from July 15 to 17. This information was confirmed by the public prosecutor in Chaumont, who specified that the young man, now 15 years old, will be tried behind closed doors in accordance with the regulations governing minors.
The defendant is currently in pretrial detention following his indictment two days after the events. He will face charges of murdering a person performing a public service, a particularly serious aggravating circumstance given the victim's position. Due to his age at the time of the events, he faces a maximum sentence of twenty years' imprisonment, not the life sentence applicable to adults.
A tragedy that had deeply affected the educational community
The events date back to June 10, 2025. On that day, Mélanie, a 31-year-old teaching assistant, was fatally stabbed at the entrance to the Françoise-Dolto middle school in Nogent. The attack occurred during a surprise bag check of students being conducted in front of the school in the presence of law enforcement. The victim succumbed to her injuries despite the rapid intervention of emergency services.
The alleged perpetrator, then a ninth-grade student at the school, was immediately subdued and arrested at the scene. The case quickly gained national attention due to the brutality of the crime and the suspect's particularly young age. The murder reignited the debate on the rise in violence in schools and the safety of education staff.
A profile considered particularly worrying
During his police custody, the teenager made statements that deeply affected investigators. According to information released at the time by the prosecutor's office, he explained that he had wanted to kill "any" female supervisor, without specifically targeting the victim. The investigation then painted a picture of a teenager described as fascinated by violence, adrift, and exhibiting an apparent lack of empathy for the consequences of his actions.
However, the expert assessments carried out during the investigation revealed no major psychiatric disorder that could have impaired his judgment at the time of the events. The magistrates therefore determined that he could be held criminally responsible for his actions, paving the way for a trial before the specialized juvenile court.
A case with significant political repercussions
The murder of Mélanie sent shockwaves far beyond the Haute-Marne region. Several political leaders, teachers' unions, and representatives of the educational community expressed their sorrow and called for in-depth reflection on the prevention of youth violence. The President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron he himself had mentioned a form of "disinhibition of violence" requiring appropriate responses from public authorities.
In the days following the tragedy, numerous gatherings were organized across France to pay tribute to the supervisor. In Nogent, a silent march brought together nearly 1,500 people who came to support the victim's family and express their solidarity with all educational staff.
A national tribute to the victim
A few weeks after the events, the Republic paid tribute to Mélanie by posthumously awarding her the insignia of Knight of the Legion of Honour. This distinction recognized her commitment to the students and the dedication she had demonstrated in carrying out her duties at the school.
The trial scheduled for July should allow for a detailed examination of the circumstances surrounding the act, the personality of the young defendant, and the conclusions of the numerous expert reports conducted during the investigation. For the victim's family and the educational community, this hearing represents an important step in the search for answers after one of the most significant school tragedies of recent years.
