Ganito escape: a prison guard jailed in the Villepinte escape investigation

The investigation into the spectacular escape of Ilyas Kherbouch, nicknamed "Ganito," continues to reveal new ramifications. A guard at the Villepinte prison in Seine-Saint-Denis has been charged and placed in pretrial detention in connection with the case, the Paris prosecutor's office announced.

The prison officer is being prosecuted for several offenses, including forgery and use of forged administrative documents, passive corruption, aiding and abetting an escape by a prison guard, escape as part of an organized group, and criminal conspiracy. In accordance with the prosecutor's request, he has been imprisoned at La Santé prison in Paris pending further investigation.

The investigation is tracing the trail of accomplices.

On March 7th, Ilyas Kherbouch successfully escaped from Villepinte prison thanks to a particularly elaborate scheme. Three accomplices participated in the operation, including two individuals posing as police officers who had come to extract the prisoner under the guise of a supposed custody hearing. Forged court documents allowed them to deceive security checks before the escape was discovered nearly forty-eight hours later.

With this new indictment, six people are now being prosecuted in this case, which has been assigned to the Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction of Paris. After his escape, the inmate, known for several violent home invasions, stayed in the Netherlands before being apprehended on March 20 in the south of France. Investigators are now trying to determine precisely the role played by the prison guard in planning and executing this escape.
