Six young men, aged 17 to 20, have been charged in Paris for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping of a mother and her 11-year-old son, which occurred on Monday in the Yonne region. They are being prosecuted for kidnapping and false imprisonment as part of an organized group, offenses punishable by life imprisonment. The prosecution has requested that they be remanded in custody.
The two victims were freed the very next day during an operation carried out in Val-de-Marne by around a hundred gendarmes, including members of the GIGN. A seventh person, initially arrested, was released after being cleared of any wrongdoing.
A violent operation motivated by a ransom
According to the investigation, four masked individuals broke into the family home Monday morning, overpowered the father, and demanded a transfer of $400.000 in cryptocurrency. After searching the premises and stealing cash, jewelry, and a weapon, they kidnapped the mother and child to extort money from them.
Having managed to free himself, the father raised the alarm, allowing investigators to quickly locate the victims, who were being held in a hotel. They were freed at dawn on Tuesday during an operation by the GIGN, ending a captivity of less than 24 hours.
