A 45-year-old woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison by a special assize court in Paris on Wednesday for her involvement with the Islamic State group. Having left for Syria in 2013 with her husband and children, she was tried for participating in a terrorist enterprise and for exposing her children to an environment that seriously endangered their safety and development.
During her trial, the defendant admitted to leading her family down a tragic path, expressing her regret and asking forgiveness from her five children. However, the judges determined that she had not fully grasped or acknowledged her adherence to the ideology espoused by the jihadist group, despite having spent several years in territories controlled by it.
A journey marked by progressive radicalization
Coming from a stable background and holding a high-level scientific degree, this former nuclear industry professional left France to join her husband, who had converted to Islam and subsequently become radicalized. After a period in Jordan and Egypt, the couple settled in Syria with their children. Her first husband died in combat there in 2015, before she remarried and continued her life under the control of the terrorist organization.
According to the evidence presented at the hearing, she held a paid position in an organization linked to the Islamic State until the fall of the caliphate. While the court did not find her to have a leadership role, it considered that her involvement in the organization demonstrated a sustained commitment to the system established by the group. The judges also emphasized the particularly serious consequences of this choice for her children, who were exposed for several years to the violence of war and jihadist ideology.
