In the Var region, a former priest has been charged following accusations of raping a child.

A former priest from the Var region has been charged with "rape and sexual assault by a person abusing their position" following accusations from a woman who claims to have been sexually abused as a child. The alleged acts took place between 2000 and 2003 in La Farlède, when the victim was approximately 11 years old.

According to the Toulon prosecutor's office, the former priest was taken into custody in Angers before being brought before an investigating judge as part of a formal judicial inquiry. The man denies all the accusations against him. Despite the prosecutor's request for his pretrial detention, he was ultimately released under judicial supervision.

A new case in a climate of increased freedom of speech

The investigation will now have to determine precisely the context of the reported events, as well as the potential responsibilities of individuals or institutions that may have been informed at the time. The investigation could last several months, according to the prosecutor's office, which emphasizes that several hearings and verifications still need to be carried out. The former priest's identity has not been made public at this stage of the proceedings.

This case is part of a broader context of successive revelations about sexual abuse within the Catholic Church in France. Since the publication of the Sauvé report in 2021, victims have been increasingly able to speak out, and several legal proceedings have been reopened or initiated. The National Independent Authority for Recognition and Reparation, created to support victims of child sexual abuse within the Church, has already received nearly 1,800 complaints since its inception.
