Five men aged 22 to 27 are being prosecuted after singing racist songs during the Marboz feria in the Ain region. Seven people were initially arrested and taken into custody, but two of them were ultimately released without charge.
The five suspects are being prosecuted for public insult based on origin, ethnicity, nationality, alleged race, or religion, as well as for inciting discrimination. They reportedly admitted to the acts and, before their arrest, sent a letter of apology and regret to the Marboz town hall.
An anti-discrimination internship at the Maison d'Izieu
The young men will be summoned in mid-August before a representative of the prosecutor to receive a probationary criminal warning. They will also be directed to a citizenship course focused on combating discrimination, organized at the Maison d'Izieu memorial museum, a site associated with the memory of Jewish children deported during the Second World War.
The case was reported by the prefect of Ain, the local municipality, the Pharos platform, and the National Center for Combating Online Hate. LICRA (International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism) and the group behind the parodied song also filed complaints. The five men are thus being prosecuted for copyright infringement, adding a copyright dimension to the charges related to racist remarks.
