The driver involved in the accident that killed three teenage girls in Haute-Loire has been formally charged and imprisoned, the Puy-en-Velay prosecutor's office announced Tuesday. He is being prosecuted for aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and hit-and-run.
The incident occurred on Friday night/Saturday morning on the RN88 highway, when a vehicle rear-ended a car carrying seven young people. Three teenage girls, aged 13 to 15, were killed, while several other passengers were injured, including a young man who remains hospitalized.
A hit-and-run after the accident and aggravating circumstances
The suspect, in his thirties, had left the scene before being arrested at his home a few hours later. Testing positive for alcohol, he was taken into custody before being brought before a judge.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the precise circumstances of the tragedy, while initial findings suggest a vehicle was struck while traveling at low speed. The victims, from the same department, were on a nighttime trip when the collision occurred.
