The streaming service wants to adapt the popular board game Catan into a film and series, using live-action and animation. This is an ambitious gamble for Netflix, which is always looking to build a popular saga that lives up to its competitors.
Giving new life to a classic board game
Netflix has announced the development of a multi-format adaptation of the game Catan, formerly known as The Settlers of Catan. The project, developed with publisher Asmodee, aims to transform this best-selling game into a narrative universe for the screen.
First released in 1995, Catan has sold over 45 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 40 languages. Unlike other franchises, however, the game has neither defined characters nor a plot. It is a strategy game centered on the colonization of a fictional island and resource management.
This lack of story requires the creators to construct a near-total narrative. To oversee this transformation, the sons of creator Klaus Teuber, who passed away in 2023, were brought into the project to remain faithful to their father's vision. According to their statement in the Asmodee press release, this development marks "a new chapter for the Catan universe."
An ambitious, but still uncertain, franchise strategy
This project is part of Netflix's broader strategy: to build a major in-house franchise. In recent years, the platform has repeatedly attempted to launch long-running series, but has failed to replicate the successes of its rivals. Rebel Moon lasted only two episodes, The Electric State received little attention, and Red Notice, despite its initial success, has not seen a concrete sequel.
With Catan, Netflix hopes to appeal to a wide audience, ranging from board game enthusiasts to fans of epic tales. The challenge remains significant: translating an abstract game into a coherent and captivating universe on screen. No specific timeline has yet been announced for the launch of the first content, either for the films or the animated series.
