5 years ago, on January 26, 2020, Kobe Bryant and eight other people were killed in a tragic helicopter crash in the hills of Calabasas, California. The Sikorsky S-76 helicopter was carrying Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and six other passengers, including basketball coach Christina Mauser, a family friend, and athletic staff. They were headed to a youth basketball game at the Mamba Academy, a sports academy founded by Kobe that is dedicated to developing young basketball players.

The accident occurred at around 9:45 a.m. that day, while the helicopter was flying at low altitude through dense fog. Visibility was extremely poor due to the bad weather, making the flight particularly dangerous. The pilot, Ara Zobayan, an experienced pilot with over 8 hours of flight time, reportedly tried to navigate through the fog using the visual reference system, but the weather conditions deteriorated rapidly.

Minutes before impact, the helicopter made a sharp turn, losing altitude at high speed. The pilot requested a climb to a higher altitude to get out of the fog, but it was too late. The helicopter crashed into a steep hillside, catching fire on impact. The crash killed all on board instantly.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation found that there was no mechanical failure of the helicopter, but that the probable cause of the accident was pilot error due to loss of visibility, also known as “spatial disorientation.” The helicopter, although equipped with modern technology, did not have an advanced safety system that would allow the pilot to fly safely in low visibility conditions, as is the case in commercial aircraft.

The whole world was shocked by the news of the disappearance of Kobe Bryant. In addition to his incredible career on the field with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won five NBA championships and scored over 33 points, Kobe Bryant was also an influential figure outside of basketball, involved in philanthropic work and creating multimedia projects. He retired from basketball in 000 and focused on projects developing young talent, including his daughter Gianna, whom he coached in basketball.

The funeral took place a month after the tragedy, on February 24, 2020, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where thousands of fans paid tribute to the athlete, along with many figures from sports and entertainment.
