Mont Blanc: the old Goûter refuge will be dismantled in the summer of 2026

The old Goûter refuge, located at over 3,800 meters altitude on the normal route of Mont Blanc, will be dismantled between June and August 2026. Closed since 2013 after the commissioning of a new building, it had become outdated.

Built in the 1960s, this mountain refuge, which had a capacity of around one hundred beds, had been replaced by a more modern structure, now an iconic landmark of the mountain range. The dismantling operation is part of a decision made by the authorities in 2025.

A construction project supervised at high altitude

The work is scheduled to take place from June 1st to August 15th, 2026, with the aim of preserving the site and sustainably restoring this high-mountain environment. The dismantled refuge will then be rebuilt in the valley, in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. Prior to the start of construction, the classic route up Mont Blanc will be temporarily closed for two days due to risks associated with ice and rockfall in the Goûter couloir.

Apart from this temporary closure, the normal ascent route will remain accessible to climbers throughout the duration of the construction work, according to authorities. This very popular route is one of the main access points to the summit of Mont Blanc, which necessitates precise planning of the work to minimize its impact on the climbing season.
