Calboni M'Bani, better known by his stage name Calbo, died this Sunday at the age of 52. A rapper and writer of French and Congolese origin, he had established himself as one of the key figures in the French hip-hop scene since the early 1990s.

A foundational journey at the heart of the golden age of French-language rap

Born on September 22, 1973 in Villiers-le-Bel (Val-d'Oise), Calbo became known by forming the duo with his brother Gaëlino M'Bani, aka Lino. Arsenik, one of the emblematic groups of the first golden age of French rap. Together, they participated in pivotal hip-hop projects of the 1990s, blending lyrical strength and social commitment in their lyrics.

Their album Quelques gouttes suffisent, released in 1998, was a critical and commercial success, featuring tracks that have become classics of the genre. The work helped define a rap aesthetic rooted in the Parisian suburbs while resonating universally with a wide audience.

Throughout his career, Calbo was not limited to Ärsenik: he also participated in hip-hop collectives and explored solo projects, blending African influences and urban sounds, while publishing texts that reflected his life experiences and artistic vision.

A cultural contribution beyond music

In addition to his rap career, Calbo was also recognized as a writer. His work often reflected social realities, life trajectories, and the challenges faced by artists from working-class neighborhoods. His contributions enriched not only the music scene but also contemporary urban literature.
