An iconic voice of Greek music has been silenced. Marinella, a towering figure in Greek popular song, died on March 28, 2026, at the age of 87, as announced by her family in a statement relayed by AFP, among others. "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marinella (…) who died at her home," they stated, confirming the death of the woman who had touched several generations.
An exceptional career and a national icon
Born Kyriaki Papadopoulou in 1938, Marinella enjoyed a remarkably long career, spanning from 1956 to 2024. She established herself as one of the most popular voices in Greece and Cyprus, and beyond, thanks to her interpretations of traditional Greek songs. Her name is also forever linked to Eurovision, where she represented Greece in 1974 with the song "Krasi, thalassa ke t'agori mou," in the competition won by the Swedish group ABBA.
Her passing has sparked deep emotion in her country. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis paid tribute to an unforgettable artist, writing that "the voice of the Grand Dame of Greek song has been silenced," while emphasizing that her songs will continue to live on in the collective memory.
His final days were marked by a serious accident on stage.
The singer's health deteriorated sharply in September 2024 when she suffered a stroke during a concert at the ancient Odeon in Athens, at the foot of the Acropolis. This episode, widely reported at the time, deeply affected the public. Hospitalized for several months and placed in intensive care, she never returned to the stage.
Since that event, her health had been a cause for concern, making her death a feared one. With Marinella's passing, a major figure of Greek culture is lost, whose voice and career have accompanied the country's musical history for nearly seven decades.
