An icon of Tropicalismo, Gilberto Gil concludes his tour at 83 years old

In São Paulo, Gilberto Gil offered his audience one last great moment, bringing to a close what he describes as his "last major tour." On Saturday, the Brazilian music icon performed for nearly three hours before 50,000 spectators gathered in the Palmeiras stadium, confirming his undiminished stage presence despite being 83 years old.

A family-friendly and emotionally charged concert

For this exceptional evening, Gilberto Gil was not alone: surrounded by his children and grandchildren, all musicians, he revisited the iconic songs from his repertoire, from Palco to Aquele abraço, including Vamos fugir. One of the most memorable moments was the performance of A paz, shared with his grandchildren Flor and Bento, which concluded with a symbolic gesture of peace directed at the audience.

Visibly moved, the artist also dedicated this concert – and his entire tour – to his daughter Preta Gil, who passed away in July 2025. This intimate dimension gave a special resonance to this final date, somewhere between celebration and tribute.

A legend of tropicalism looking towards a new stage

A major figure in Tropicalismo, a musical movement born under the Brazilian military dictatorship, Gilberto Gil profoundly transformed his country's music by blending samba, bossa nova, rock, and pop alongside artists like Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque. During the concert, a video message from Chico Buarque served as a reminder of the politically charged history of their song "Cálice," linked to the censorship of the time.

While this tour marks the end of large-scale stadium productions, Gilberto Gil has no intention of leaving the stage. He now plans more intimate concerts, particularly in Europe in the coming weeks, with a highly anticipated performance at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on April 3rd.
