David Guetta electrifies the Stade de France with Jennifer Lopez and Akon as surprise guests

The promise was grand, and the result lived up to it. On Thursday, June 11, 80,000 spectators filled the Saint-Denis stadium for the first date of the Ultimate Monolith Show, three landmark concerts that David Guetta was performing solo for the very first time in France's largest stadium. The show takes its name from a giant monolith, over thirty meters tall, erected especially for the occasion. After opening sets by Afrojack and Armin van Buuren, the 58-year-old DJ received a standing ovation upon his entrance. "Paris, tonight I'm playing in my city, at home, where it all began. This first show is going to be very special," he declared, before launching into a string of hits including "Titanium" and "Right Now." A few hours before the concert, he told Le Parisien: "When I walk into the stadium, I can't help but see myself back in my father's basement, practicing and organizing little parties for the students at my high school."

Jennifer Lopez, Akon, fireworks and tears: a night to remember.

The real surprise of the evening came midway through the set. Jennifer Lopez appeared on stage to perform "Save Me Tonight," the track released in March with Guetta, before launching into her hit "On the Floor." This had been a closely guarded secret since their joint performance at Coachella in April. The Senegalese-American singer Akon then joined the DJ for a version of "Sexy Bitch," triggering another roar from the crowd. In total, the two-hour show was punctuated by spectacular light displays and a final fireworks display, not without a few tears from the artist. His 22-year-old son, Elvis, was in the audience; he is expected to join his father on stage for the final concert on Saturday, a "very symbolic passing of the torch," according to the DJ. Two additional dates are scheduled for June 12th and 13th, with more surprises promised.
