Municipal elections in Mayotte: massive renewal and breakthrough for the right

The second round of municipal elections in Mayotte has profoundly reshaped the local political landscape. Of the department's 17 municipalities, only five incumbent mayors were re-elected, a sign of a marked renewal of the municipal scene.

This wave of change is accompanied, however, by the return of former elected officials. Several figures who have already led their municipalities are taking the reins again, illustrating a mix of "throw the bums out" sentiment and continuity in the voters' choices.

The right wing is making significant progress

The Republicans recorded a significant increase in their control, going from three to seven mayoralties. The party retained its strongholds and won several municipalities, notably at the expense of the Movement for the Development of Mayotte (MDM), which suffered a marked decline despite some gains.

The election was also marked by the defeat of several national figures involved in the campaign, while appeals and investigations could still emerge following suspicions of irregularities during the first round.
