Three people were killed Monday in southern Lebanon after a drone strike targeted a vehicle near Sidon. Lebanese authorities said the attack was carried out by an Israeli drone. The Israeli military, for its part, stated that it had targeted members of Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed armed group.
This new operation comes as a ceasefire has been officially in effect since the end of November 2024, following more than a year of confrontations linked to the regional conflict triggered by the war in Gaza. Despite this agreement, sporadic strikes continue, with Israel stating its intention to prevent any rebuilding of Hezbollah's military capabilities.
A border that remains unstable
The situation remains particularly volatile in the south of the country, where Israel maintains a military presence in several areas it considers strategic. Beirut, under international pressure, has pledged to strengthen control over this region and dismantle non-state armed infrastructure south of the Litani River, but has so far failed to reach a consensus with Hezbollah.
These new outbreaks of violence are fueling diplomatic concerns about the strength of the truce, as multilateral discussions involving the United States, France and the UN attempt to avoid a lasting escalation along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
