The Israeli army issued an urgent evacuation order Tuesday for the entire city of Tyre and its surrounding areas in southern Lebanon. IDF spokesman Avichay Adraee posted a message on the social media platform X explicitly targeting the city's Christian quarter, as well as Palestinian camps and surrounding residential areas. Residents are instructed to move immediately north of the Zahrani River, according to military directives. This order comes amid escalating clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, marked by continuous exchanges of fire.
A heavy human toll already
Recent Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon have left at least fourteen people dead, according to a Red Cross report. Faced with the imminent threat of military operations targeting Hezbollah positions, thousands of residents began a mass exodus from Tyre on Tuesday morning. This evacuation now encompasses the entire city, including areas previously relatively untouched, such as the Christian quarter, signaling a geographical expansion of the areas targeted by the IDF.
Strategic escalation in southern Lebanon
Israeli authorities justify these evacuation orders by citing the need to protect civilians ahead of planned strikes against infrastructure belonging to the Lebanese Shiite movement. The city of Tyre, located about 30 kilometers from the Israeli border, represents a major strategic objective in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that has been ongoing for several months. The call to leave the city marks a new stage in the intensification of military operations conducted by the IDF in Lebanon.
