Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia might again try to involve Belarus in the conflict in Ukraine, relying on information from Ukrainian intelligence services. This statement revives concerns about the conflict spreading beyond current borders.
According to Zelensky, concrete signs of preparation have been observed on the Belarusian border. He specifically mentions road construction work leading to Ukraine and the installation of artillery positions in areas near the line of contact.
These elements, relayed by the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian forces, suggest, according to Kyiv, a desire on the part of Moscow to strengthen its military capabilities in the region, possibly with the support of its Belarusian ally. "We believe that Russia will once again try to involve Belarus in its conflict," the Ukrainian president stated.
Belarus, a close ally of Russia, had already served as a rear base at the start of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, particularly for military and logistical operations. However, Minsk has not officially committed its troops to the fighting.
This new alert comes as the war between Ukraine and Russia continues for more than four years, amid persistent tensions on several fronts. Direct involvement by Belarus could mark a significant escalation of the conflict.
Faced with these risks, Ukrainian authorities are closely monitoring military movements in the region and calling for increased vigilance from the international community, while prospects for de-escalation remain limited.
