Fighting between government forces and Houthis in Yemen has triggered a wave of mass displacement. More than 2,000 people have crossed the Gulf of Tadjoura by boat since Thursday evening to reach Djibouti.

The International Organization for Migration confirmed on Sunday that more than 2,000 Yemenis had fled by sea to Djibouti since Thursday evening, as fighting between government forces and the Houthis intensified in the territory.

In total, at least 76,000 people have left their homes since July, according to the same organization. This figure illustrates the scale of a humanitarian crisis that is worsening as the front line shifts.

The Houthis, who already controlled much of the north of the country, including the capital Sana'a and the port city of Hodeida, extended their hold on the western coast in just a few days. On Thursday, they seized Mokha, a strategic port on the west coast, accelerating population displacements in the region.
