The Chinese president Xi Jinping could make a visit to North Korea as early as next week, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported Wednesday evening, citing a senior government official.
According to another government source, a team from the Chinese security services as well as protocol officials recently visited Pyongyang, suggesting that a visit by Xi could take place in late May or early June.
According to Yonhap, Xi is seeking to play a mediating role between the American president and the US president. Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, following the meeting between Trump and Xi last week.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately comment on this information.
China remains North Korea's main economic and political ally. Relations between Beijing and Pyongyang have strengthened in recent months after a period of strain during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kim Jong-un visited Beijing last year and participated alongside Xi Jinping and the Russian president. Vladimir Putin, at a major military parade.
Donald Trump, who met with Kim Jong-un three times during his first term to discuss the North Korean nuclear program, recently stated that he remained open to another meeting with the North Korean leader, with whom he says he has good relations.
