US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Thursday that the United States hopes to redouble diplomatic efforts to end the war in Sudan, where violence has resumed, particularly in the capital, Khartoum.
The head of American diplomacy declared that he was " implied " on the Sudanese issue, specifying that he had discussed it in recent days with international actors, including Kenyan President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. "We are extremely concerned about returning to the situation of a decade ago, or even less," he told reporters on board his plane.
Rubio made these statements to reporters accompanying him home after a trip to the Caribbean region. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic solutions to resolve the Sudanese crisis, repeating: "We are extremely concerned about returning to the situation of a decade ago, or even less."
He added : "We don't want to see this happen. That's why we're seeking to better understand the situation, engage with our partners, and consult with them on the steps to take."
His predecessor, Antony Blinken, had already tried to mediate to end the war that broke out nearly two years ago between the army chief and his former deputy.
