Washington launches offensive against "birth tourism" networks

The President's Administration Donald Trump ordered a strengthening of operations against networks accused of organizing "birth tourism" in the United States, according to internal information seen by Reuters.

ICE has launched a new "birth tourism initiative," instructing its agents across the country to target organizations suspected of helping foreign pregnant women obtain visas by concealing their intentions to give birth on U.S. soil.

These networks would facilitate entry into the territory with the aim of children being born in the United States and thus automatically obtaining American citizenship, by virtue of birthright citizenship.

US authorities are considering prosecutions for fraud and other related offenses against those involved in these practices, which the administration considers abusive.

This hardening is in line with a political line defended by Donald Trump, who has regularly criticized birthright citizenship and highlighted these cases to justify reforms aimed at restricting access to citizenship.

The issue of "birth tourism" remains controversial, however, with some observers pointing out that documented cases remain limited, while others denounce a political instrumentalization of the subject.

With this new initiative, Washington nevertheless intends to send a clear signal and intensify the fight against what it considers a circumvention of the migration system.
