The United States is reportedly considering a special operation to seize near-nuclear-grade uranium from Iran, according to a Bloomberg News report. This option is currently under review by the president's administration. Donald Trump in the context of the military escalation between Washington, Israel and Iran.
According to Bloomberg, citing three diplomatic officials familiar with the matter, the White House is considering deploying special forces to secure stockpiles of enriched uranium held by Iran. The aim would be to prevent this strategic material from being used to develop a nuclear weapon.
Reuters, however, reports that it was unable to independently verify this information immediately. US authorities had not officially confirmed the existence of such a plan at the time of publication.
This military option would come amid extreme tensions surrounding the Iranian nuclear program, as the United States and Israel have launched a series of strikes against facilities and targets linked to the Islamic Republic.
The possibility of a ground operation directly targeting uranium stockpiles would represent a significant escalation compared to the air strikes and indirect operations carried out so far.
Since the beginning of the crisis, the question of controlling Iran's nuclear program has been at the heart of the concerns of Washington and its allies, who claim to want to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while Iran continues to deny any intention of developing such a capability.
