Violence, neglect, and deaths: the largest migrant detention center in the United States is targeted by a lawsuit

Several civil rights organizations have filed a lawsuit against U.S. authorities regarding inhumane detention conditions at the country's largest immigration detention center. The lawsuit targets Camp East Montana, a sprawling complex in El Paso, Texas, where three detainees have died since it opened nine months ago.

The lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), along with other human rights organizations, on behalf of four people currently detained at the facility. The camp, located on Fort Bliss military base, was established as part of the president's administration's policy of mass deportations. Donald Trump.

According to the complaint, detainees were allegedly subjected to beatings by guards, inadequate medical care, and dangerous living conditions. The plaintiffs also claim that several violent incidents have been reported inside the facility, where more than 2,700 people are currently being held.

The organizations behind the legal proceedings state that an inspection of the facility revealed 49 alleged violations of applicable standards. They believe these deficiencies endanger the health and safety of detainees and are demanding urgent measures to improve their living conditions.

The lawsuit targets, in particular, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which manages the camp, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), its governing agency. This is the first legal action filed against the center since it opened.

For its part, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not immediately respond to the allegations. Federal authorities had previously stated that the facility, estimated to cost $1,2 billion, met federal standards for migrant detention. Human rights organizations now hope that the courts will mandate changes to prevent further abuses and loss of life.
