At least eight people were killed and more than 30 others wounded in a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight, according to Ukrainian authorities. The strikes caused significant damage in several districts of the capital, where rescue teams are continuing their operations.
According to local authorities, several apartment buildings were hit and fires broke out. The mayor of Kyiv indicated that residents were still trapped under the rubble, while a nine-story residential building partially collapsed as a result of the shelling.
Firefighters and rescue services are mobilized to search for possible survivors and secure damaged buildings. The death toll could still rise, as search operations were still underway at the time of the latest reports.
Following this attack, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky decided to cut short his trip to Ireland in order to return home. Poland, for its part, briefly deployed fighter jets to monitor its airspace due to the intensification of Russian strikes near its border.
At the same time, Russian authorities claimed to have repelled a drone attack targeting the Leningrad region. These events illustrate a further escalation of hostilities between the two countries, as airstrikes increase on both sides of the front.
