American journalist Shelly Kittleson has been released after being kidnapped in late March in Baghdad by an Iraqi armed group, US authorities announced.
According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the journalist was being held by Kataib Hezbollah, an Iraqi militia aligned with Iran.
His release was made possible through coordination between several American institutions, including the Pentagon, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Iraqi judicial authorities.
Kittleson's abduction in Baghdad had sparked serious concern amid heightened regional tensions linked to the conflict involving Iran and the United States.
This episode illustrates the persistent risks to journalists and foreign nationals in certain areas of the Middle East, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions.
