An Israeli airstrike on Saturday in the southern Lebanese town of Saksakiyeh killed at least seven people and wounded 15, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. A child was among the victims, Lebanese health authorities confirmed.
The attack targeted this town located in a region regularly affected by exchanges of fire between the Israeli army and the Shiite movement Hezbollah. Images released after the strike showed rescue workers and residents inspecting the rubble with heavy equipment.
The Israeli army confirmed it had conducted the operation, stating that it targeted Hezbollah militants in the city. According to the IDF, these fighters were preparing attacks against Israeli soldiers operating near the border.
Since the start of the war in Gaza, tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated sharply. The almost daily clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border have resulted in hundreds of deaths and forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee the border areas on both sides.
Lebanese authorities regularly denounce Israeli strikes targeting civilian areas, while Israel accuses Hezbollah of using populated areas to conduct its military operations. No immediate reaction from Hezbollah regarding this strike was reported.
This new attack comes at a particularly tense regional time, as international diplomatic efforts have so far struggled to prevent a wider spread of the conflict in the Middle East.
