A Palestinian family in the occupied West Bank claims they were forced by Israeli settlers to exhume and then rebury their father's body in another location, near the re-established settlement of Sa-Nur, according to testimonies reported Friday.
The incident reportedly occurred in the village of Asasa, near Jenin, in the northern West Bank. According to the family, settlers objected to the burial in the recently used local cemetery, forcing the deceased's relatives to move the body.
The Israeli army said it sent soldiers to the scene after being informed of the incident, without providing further details on any measures taken.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the case, denouncing it as an attack on human dignity and calling for the protection of Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories.
The Israeli government approved last year the re-establishment of the Sa-Nur settlement, which was evacuated in 2005 as part of the Israeli disengagement from Gaza and parts of the West Bank.
Tensions remain particularly high in the northern West Bank, where violence between settlers, Israeli forces and Palestinians has increased in recent months.
