Sri Lankan authorities indicated on Tuesday that a second Iranian vessel was located approximately nine nautical miles off the country's coast, according to a government spokesman.
This announcement comes the day after an operation conducted by the Sri Lankan navy to assist an Iranian military vessel in distress in the waters south of the island. The crew of this vessel, identified as the IRIS Dena, was rescued by the Sri Lankan naval forces.
According to the Sri Lankan cabinet spokesperson, the second Iranian vessel spotted near the coast is expected to be moved. Authorities have not specified the exact nature of the vessel or the reasons for its presence in the area.
Colombo is closely monitoring the situation, as the Indian Ocean region is experiencing heightened tensions due to the conflict involving Iran and the focus on naval movements related to this crisis.
Sri Lankan authorities have not reported any further incidents, but indicated that the navy continues to monitor the area to ensure maritime safety and the management of ongoing operations.
