A bus accident on the island of La Gomera, Spain, has left at least one British tourist dead and 27 injured, rescue services said.
The vehicle left the GM-2 road before plunging into a ravine in a mountainous area of this Canary Island, a popular destination for European visitors. The victim was a 77-year-old British man, according to the Civil Guard.
Among the injured, three are in serious condition. Several victims had to be evacuated by helicopter to the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe hospital as well as to other facilities in the archipelago.
The bus was carrying 27 British nationals and the driver. According to the tour operator Holiday Property Bond, they were on their way to the airport to return to the UK when the accident occurred.
British authorities have expressed their support for the victims and their families. The Foreign Office has indicated that it is in contact with Spanish authorities and ready to provide consular assistance.
The precise circumstances of the accident remain to be determined, while an investigation has been opened to establish the causes of the vehicle leaving the road.
