Judge Alexandre de Moraes, a member of Brazil's Federal Supreme Court, has suspended the implementation of a bill that would have significantly reduced the prison sentence of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
According to the decision published on Saturday, this measure currently prevents the entry into force of a text adopted by Congress which would have reduced Bolsonaro's sentence for plotting a coup d'état after the 2022 election from 27 years in prison to just over two years.
Two political parties and the ABI filed a lawsuit this week, arguing that the law was unconstitutional. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had also attempted to block the legislation with a veto, but this was overturned by Congress last month.
The law also applied to people convicted after the January 2023 riots, when supporters of Jair Bolsonaro invaded and vandalized the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court in Brasilia.
