Caught in the fires ravaging the province of Almería, two British nationals on holiday were found severely burned and semi-conscious at the bottom of a ravine. A two-hour rescue operation airlifted them to a hospital.
The two victims, a couple on a tourist trip to the area, were reportedly caught in the flames while hiking. The Guardia Civil searched the area for survivors before locating them in the difficult-to-access ravine. Their evacuation by helicopter took nearly two hours.
The fires ravaging the province of Almería have already claimed 12 lives and destroyed more than 6,000 hectares of vegetation. At least 23 people remain missing, according to local authorities.
These fires are part of a wave of deadly blazes raging across Spain, fueled by extreme weather conditions. The province of Almería, in the southeast of the country, is among the hardest-hit areas.
