A Frontier Airlines plane struck and killed a pedestrian Friday night during takeoff at Denver International Airport, according to airport authorities.
The aircraft, an Airbus A321 bound for Los Angeles, reported striking a person during takeoff before aborting the maneuver. According to the airport, the pedestrian had crossed the perimeter security fence and was crossing the runway when they were hit. Their identity has not been released.
The incident caused a brief engine fire and smoke to enter the cabin. All 224 passengers and seven crew members were safely evacuated.
Twelve people suffered minor injuries during the evacuation, five of whom were taken to hospital, according to local authorities.
Frontier Airlines has indicated that it is cooperating with airport officials and security authorities in the investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
