Matthew Huttle, 42, a former convict for his participation in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and recently pardoned by Donald Trump, was shot dead on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in Indiana by a police officer after refusing to comply. Police said the armed assailant resisted an arrest attempt before being fatally shot.
Huttle, who was pardoned a week earlier by President Trump as part of a clemency package for 1.500 Capitol raiders, had served a six-month prison sentence. The pardons have drawn criticism, including from Republicans, for their breadth and the fact that they included individuals who committed violence against law enforcement.
The tragedy comes as another pardoned inmate, Daniel Ball, was arrested in Florida on a firearms charge prior to the assault.
