Ukraine: Zelensky in Sweden for an expected announcement on Gripen fighter jets

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky He is traveling to Sweden on Thursday, where an announcement related to Gripen fighter jets is expected, according to a source cited by Reuters. The Swedish government confirmed the Ukrainian leader's visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

This meeting takes place within the framework of discussions between Stockholm and Kyiv on strengthening the Ukrainian air force. A letter of intent signed last year provides for the possibility for Sweden to sell up to 150 Gripen E fighter jets produced by Saab.

However, as these aircraft are not expected to be delivered for several years, the two countries also discussed the possibility of transferring aircraft already in service, Gripen C/D models, in order to respond more quickly to Ukraine's military needs.

A source with direct knowledge of the discussions told Reuters that the announcement expected on Thursday would indeed concern the Gripen aircraft, without however specifying the exact nature of the agreement or the decision that will be presented.

This prospect had an impact on the financial markets, with Saab Group shares rising following this news, with an increase of around 5% observed during the session.

The question of strengthening Ukraine's fighter jets has become a central issue for Kyiv, which is seeking to modernize its fleet in the context of the conflict with Russia. The Ukrainian Defense Minister recently mentioned the possibility of an agreement on Gripen E aircraft in the coming months, following the European Union's approval of a €90 billion loan to support Ukraine.
