Le président américain Donald Trump congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on his party's "decisive" victory in last weekend's parliamentary elections in Armenia. These elections were closely watched due to escalating tensions between Yerevan and Moscow.
According to official results, Nikol Pashinyan's Civil Contract party won 49,8% of the vote in Sunday's election. This result allows him to retain a parliamentary majority under the Armenian electoral system, thus strengthening the Prime Minister's position at the head of the country.
In a message posted Wednesday, Donald Trump welcomed the election results, seeing them as confirmation of the popular support enjoyed by the Armenian leader. Relations between Washington and Yerevan have strengthened in recent years, while ties between Armenia and Russia have experienced several periods of tension.
The election was, however, marred by accusations of foreign interference. International election observers reported what they described as blatant Russian interference in the electoral process, allegations that fuel concerns about Moscow's influence in the post-Soviet space.
For several years, Nikol Pashinyan has sought to diversify Armenia's international partnerships while reducing its historical dependence on Russia. This strategy has accelerated following recent disagreements between the two countries on regional security issues.
The victory of the ruling party thus appears as a significant political success for Pashinyan, who secures another term despite a complex geopolitical context. The election could also mark a new stage in Armenia's diplomatic repositioning between Russia, the United States, and Europe.
As Moscow and Yerevan go through a period of strained relations, the outcome of these elections is being closely watched by the major powers, all of which are seeking to increase their influence in the South Caucasus, a strategic region located between Europe and Asia.
