Trump faces explosive Republican backlash over his $1,7 billion fund

Le président américain Donald Trump faces growing opposition within his own political camp over a controversial $1,776 billion fund intended, according to him, to compensate people he considers to be victims of "instrumentalization" by the government under the Biden administration.

In the Senate, several Republican senators demanded either the outright elimination of the fund or the establishment of strict safeguards to regulate its use. This opposition led to the suspension on Thursday of consideration of a sweeping $72 billion bill dedicated to enforcing immigration laws.

Critics denounce a possible presidential "slush fund" and are particularly concerned about potential payments to people involved in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. The debate now threatens to provoke a major political confrontation just months before the US midterm elections.

Democrats also intend to exploit this controversy to increase pressure on Republicans. They plan to introduce several amendments to force conservative lawmakers to take a public stance on this sensitive fund.

The day before this parliamentary crisis, Senate Majority Leader John Thune had already blocked $1 billion intended to fund a new ballroom at the White House, a project supported by Trump. Thune acknowledged that he lacked the necessary support within his own party.

Donald Trump quickly responded on his Truth Social platform, claiming that he was seeking to bring "justice" to those who, according to him, had been victims of a "corrupt" and "manipulated" Biden administration.

This new rift illustrates the growing tensions between Trump and some Republican leaders in Congress, as several conservative elected officials fear the political and electoral consequences of projects deemed too controversial in the run-up to the November election.
